Insurance is where rental companies either protect the fleet or scare off the booking. Present it clearly on the booking page and both happen less: fewer uninsured drives, fewer abandoned bookings.
What goes on the booking page
- Packages, not fine print. "Basic — you pay up to J$X if damaged", "Full — you pay nothing". Three at most.
- Mandatory vs optional. If your insurer requires a waiver, make it mandatory in the system so it can't be skipped; optional extras remain optional.
- The deposit next to the price. Renters who discover a J$50,000 hold at pickup cancel; renters who saw it at booking arrive with the card.
- Second driver. A fee and a name field — added at booking, printed on the agreement.
How to price them
Flat per rental is simpler than per day for short rentals and easier to explain at the counter; use per-day only for long-term leases. Check the packages against your insurer's excess so the "full" package really does leave the renter with nothing to pay.
Collecting the deposit
Card pre-authorisation through a hosted gateway (Scotiabank or Fygaro), bank transfer with proof before pickup, or at the counter — the system should record which, and the check-in inspection should be what releases it.
The mistakes we fix most often
- Insurance hidden behind a "call us" — bookings drop.
- Packages priced per day on a 3-day rental — renters do the maths and leave.
- Deposit not on the booking record — nobody remembers who paid what.
