Before you spend a dollar
The Starter Checklist. Ten things, in order.
What to set up before you pay anyone for anything — most of it is free. Save this page; tick them off.
- 1Pick a name you can get the domain for
Search the .com before you print anything. If the .com is taken, pick a different name — not a weird spelling. Cost: a domain is about J$3,000 a year.
- 2One WhatsApp Business number
Separate from your personal line. Set the business name, hours, a catalogue and an away message. Free.
- 3Google Business Profile
Free. This is the box people see when they search "near me". Right category, real photos, right hours. Ask your first three customers for a review.
- 4A way to get paid that isn't cash only
Bank transfer with a proof-of-payment rule, Lynk, and — when you're ready — card payments. Write the rule down: no payment, no booking.
- 5Your prices, written down
Most lost sales in Jamaica are "how much?" never answered. A price list you can send in one message.
- 6Register the business
Companies Office of Jamaica, then TRN and NIS. You'll need it for a bank account and for card payments.
- 7A free listing in the Jamaica Business Directory
Reviewed by a person, live in about a day, found on Google. Free. List your business →
- 8Ten photos of the real thing
Your product, your space, your hands at work — phone camera, daylight. These go on Google, WhatsApp and the website later.
- 9One page on the internet that is yours
When you have customers asking questions, a one-page site with your prices, WhatsApp button and map stops the repeat questions. From J$35,000 to build, then J$4,500 a month — but not before steps 1–8.
- 10A number you check every Friday
Enquiries, bookings or orders — one number, written down weekly. If it's not moving, something above is missing.
