🕳 Your Web Developer Disappeared. Here's How You Get Your Site Back.

It's one of the most common emergencies in small business, everywhere in the world: the person who built your website stops replying — new number, closed agency, or just gone — and suddenly you realize you don't actually control your own site.

Breathe. This is recoverable in almost every case. Here's the order of operations.

1. Find out who owns the domain (this is the crown jewel)

Run your domain through a WHOIS lookup. If it's registered in your name/email — great, you can reset the registrar password and take control. If it's registered in the developer's name, contact the registrar with proof you own the business; most have a dispute/recovery process. The domain matters more than the website files — control the domain and you control your future.

2. Locate the hosting

Check old invoices and emails for a hosting company name. The site's DNS records also reveal where it's hosted. If the hosting account was theirs and payments stop, your site can vanish — so this has a clock on it. Hosting companies will usually work with the verified domain owner.

3. Get a full backup FIRST

Before changing anything, capture what exists: a full copy of the site files and database (or at minimum a crawl of every page). If access is lost later, you can rebuild from this.

4. Rotate every credential

Registrar, hosting, CMS admin, email, payment gateways — new passwords on all of it, under an email address YOU control. Remove the old developer's accounts.

5. Decide: revive or rebuild

Sometimes the recovered site is worth keeping; sometimes it was the reason you weren't getting customers anyway. Get an honest assessment before pouring money into either.
