STEP 2 · WEBSITE, BUT NO CUSTOMERS
Business owners ask which one to focus on as if it were a choice. It is not. The customer who searches "car rental Montego Bay" on Google, the one who asks a friend and gets sent an Instagram handle, and the one reading a guide on how to pick a car rental are three different people. Here is what each channel actually does.
Google Business Profile — the intent channel
Someone who types "dentist in Kingston" wants a dentist now. Google shows three map results with phone buttons, hours and reviews. If you are not there, you do not exist for that person. Strengths: intent, reviews, the call button. Weaknesses: you compete with everyone, and Google decides who shows.
Instagram — the browsing and referral channel
Nobody searches Instagram for "plumber". They scroll, they see a friend tag you, they check your page to see if you look real. Strengths: proof of work, personality, referrals. Weaknesses: it does not rank for searches, the algorithm hides you from most followers, and a DM is not a booking.
A reviewed directory — the research channel
A person reading "how to start a bakery in Jamaica" or "how to choose a car rental" is further along: comparing, shortlisting, about to decide. A directory page inside that reading — with your name, parish, description and link — catches them. Strengths: a real page Google can rank, a link to your site, placement inside the guides, no algorithm. Weaknesses: only as good as its review process, which is why most directories are useless and the Jamaica Business Directory reads every submission.
What to do with all three
- Same name, same phone number, same town and parish on each. Consistency is a ranking factor on Google and a trust factor for customers.
- Google profile first (intent), directory second (research, ten minutes), Instagram third (proof, ongoing).
- Link them: the directory page links to your site or Instagram; Instagram bio links to your directory page or site; Google's website field points at whichever page converts.
- Reviews live on Google; proof lives on Instagram; the directory shows both.
- When a website exists, all three point at it, and it takes the booking.
The honest ranking for a typical Jamaican small business
- Walk-in or call-now business (salon, garage, pharmacy, restaurant): Google first, directory second, Instagram third.
- Made-to-order or visual business (cakes, decor, fashion, photography): Instagram first, Google second, directory third.
- Considered purchase (car rental, lawyer, lender, clinic, tour): Google and the directory together, Instagram as proof.

Frequently asked
Do I still need a website if I have all three?
Not on day one. You need one when you want bookings, orders or payments taken for you, or when bigger customers ask for it.
Which directory should a Jamaican business use?
One that reviews listings by hand and has real pages per business. The Jamaica Business Directory on ezywebpro.com is free and reviewed; add others only if they bring you customers.
Does a directory listing help my Google ranking?
A consistent listing with a link is one of the signals Google uses for local businesses. It is not magic, but it is free and it helps.
Should I pay for a featured listing?
Only once the free one is working and you want the WhatsApp button and top placement. The free listing is complete.
