Thin margins are not a dropshipping problem. They are a pricing problem. Here is the formula and three examples.
The formula
Item US$20 + shipping US$8 + duty estimate US$6 + card fee US$1.20 = US$35.20 landed ≈ J$5,560 at 158. × 1.8 = J$10,000 → shelf J$9,999. Margin ≈ J$4,400 before your time.
Multipliers by category
- Small accessories, low competition: 2.0–2.2
- Outdoor gear, tools: 1.7–1.9
- Electronics: 1.5–1.6 (and only if you can support it)
Duty
Estimate it per category and price it in; never quote a threshold to customers. The guide deliberately gives no dollar figure — rates change and the customer is the importer of record only if you say so.
The exchange rate
Set the rate in your pricing rules; re-price everything in one click when it moves. Absorb small moves; pass on big ones.
Three examples
- Camping lantern: landed US$14 → J$2,212 × 2.0 = J$4,499.
- Fishing rod: landed US$41 → J$6,478 × 1.8 = J$11,699.
- Portable power station: landed US$180 → J$28,440 × 1.55 = J$43,999 — only with a support plan.
